Just When you think you can Breathe…

Along comes another wave! This is how a business feels when it’s doing good things! Not only have I been busy since I “word of mouth advertising” announced that I can help businesses coordinate their events, but it has been an awesome adrenaline rush! These feelings bring back so many memories of my working for my Dad growing up in the restaurant business…I guess what they say is true, “you really never get it out of your blood” And I haven’t. I had tried for years, to not have anything to do with coordinating and planning anything to do with food, vendors, events, even attending events, (BORING!) But, to no avail, here I am, back again and this time in full throttle mode!
During my time that I was taking my many years long break from being a foodie, I still had some of my hand in it, much to my delight! Being PTA President, Publicity Chair and Cultural Arts Chair for the kids schools, kept me going and my love affair alive! I never really fully understood why my Dad was away so much for “The Restaurant” as my mother so fondly put it, but now I do. It is a true love affair with the rush of all the excitement of planning, coordinating all the vendors, creating a look and the feel of the atmosphere (whether it be for relaxing or giving in nature), the endless visions do not stop.
It is Sunday, the day of rest, and what was my mind thinking at 7 am in the morning, fundraising ideas for a new client I am helping to create ideas and helping to plan with a group….http://www.meetup.com/S4M-Community-Supporters/ Help me, Help them!
I know my visions and dreams will not stop, at least my dreams of opening a restaurant have dissipated for now, and I know my love affair with the look and feel of an event will live on! It’s exciting to me! It truly does not feel like work to me…that is what is driving me to always be better. I know my Dad taught me this indirectly, but I do hope to pass the passion and drive onto my kids and I hope they take on the world, like I want to!!!

Networking Know How…by Christina Blandi-James

Ok, so you have gone to a networking meeting or two,  you’ve made your appearance, now what? If you have a business card folder filled to the brink of capacity, have  followed up on some of them, but to no avail, keep collecting them like it’s a hobby. I know exactly what you’re thinking…”How am I going to stand out in the crowd, remember everyone I met and of course be remembered, and get in contact with them in a timely and effective time management way?”
What is a business person to do?  Well, here are some tips to make yourself stand out in the crowd and be remembered and get that appointment or connection:

  1. First of all, be on time to any networking event or business meeting!  Precise promptness is essential.
  2. Meet and Greet.  Don’t be shy, put yourself out there..that’s what we’re there for!
  3. Introduce yourself, shake their hands, look them in the eyes and most definitely, be genuinely interested in them.  First impressions are everything!
  4. Let them know what you do for a living.  Be quick and detailed as possible.  Don’t give a long drawn out dissertation… you will lose their interest if it is!
  5. Give some examples of what you have done or who you have worked with in the past or present.
  6. Be funny…  Laughter is a common ice breaker and it makes a good impression. Smiles light up the world!
  7. Ask their advice on something.  You might have a problem that they can help solve.  Everyone wants to help others in some way and it is a good way to be viewed as an expert in your field.
  8. Always, repeat their name in the conversation at some point. And at the end..Thank them for meeting them and promise to connect with them soon.
  9. Follow through with that promise.  You will leave a lasting impression if you do.  Then call them.
  10. I have always said, “ I am my own worst enemy…”  but where do I get this from?  I have learned over the years that if I dare to dream, only I can make things happen.
Through all my struggles when I grew up, learning hard lessons from my father and grandfather about “if you give an inch, you will receive tenfold back”, and how to take the “higher road” even if you can’t see the lesson to learn.  I continue to enlighten myself with the positive cheers not only from my supporters and champions, but from myself. If a negative situation arises in your life, look at it head on and take the positive from it.  God always has a reason for the way things happen.  It is up to you to see it in a new light.
It has to come from within.  If you can learn to believe in others then you can learn to believe in yourself.
There is a reason why each of us decided to embark on the most challenging task of all in life, to become an entrepreneur.  We have a dream!  We believe in our capabilities to endure the test, to become an inventor, a dreamer, or an owner of the best parts of us, our skills and knowledge!  It’s our soul that gives us our passions.  I believe that if we follow our hearts, our minds and our souls, our passions can take us to places that we never heard of.
We may not always continue on the path that we went to school to learn, and our soul’s path may have taken us down another road.  Our soul has been speaking to us, our supporters have been telling us to pursue our dreams!
Isn’t it time to listen to our hearts and souls and learn from others to achieve those goals?  One person can not know everything there is to know about running a business.  We sometimes do not know everything about income taxes or corporate taxes, that is what a supporter like Laurice is for!  We don’t know everything or have the time to devote to marketing or event planning, that is what I am here for! Or we need some insight into how to strategize our business plans and manage our projects or give you steps on time management, that is Tonya’s expertise!   It is our best asset to realize that sometimes we need the help of others to help guide us so we can grow from those experiences.
My suggestions to help you dream!
*Network, find others in the areas of expertise you do not know and develop your knowledge.
*Network to reach out and teach someone else.
*Impart your wisdom and expertise to a non profit, volunteer your time.  You might just gain some more exposure, at the same time as contributing to the community and giving back.  It really does make a person feel good!
*Don’t be afraid, pick up the phone and make that cold call! Set the appointment. ASK for the appointment. When you are direct, you will more likely land the appt.
*When you call someone, introduce yourself, not just the company.  Make it more personal, they are more likely to respond.  And try to make a joke in there some where.  Laughter eases the awkwardness of a cold call!
*Most of all, BELIEVE, in yourself and your capabilities. Learn the hard lessons and to not make the same mistakes again. Only you can make your dreams come true!
We are all here today to help each other.  There is a reason why God has given us each other.  To help, to grow, to guide, to inspire, and to teach others!

The Ten Commandments for Social Media

Here are your Ten Commandments or things you need to be doing to get in and win with social media.

  1. Thou Shalt Blog (like crazy).
  2. Thou Shalt Create Profiles (everywhere).
  3. Thou Shalt Upload Photos (lots of them).
  4. Thou Shalt Upload Videos (all you can find).
  5. Thou Shalt Podcast (often).
  6. Thou Shalt Set Alerts (immediately).
  7. Thou Shalt Comment (on a multitude of blogs).
  8. Thou Shalt Get Connected (with everyone).
  9. Thou Shalt Explore Social Media (30 minutes per week).
  10. Thou Shalt Be Creative (go forth and create creatively)!

Commandment 1. Thou Shalt Blog (like crazy)
Blog. Please. That’s the first priority. Set up a blog, a personal blog, a business blog. It’s easier than you think. Use an existing blogging site such as Blogger.com or GOingOn.com or install your own branded blogging site right on your own server by using WordPress. And, WordPress is free.
Commandment 2. Thou Shalt Create Profiles (everywhere)
Create your profiles; do it now before someone else takes them. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. That’s called cyber squatting. So get out there. Use Open Social to make filling in your profiles as easy as a click of a button.
Commandment 3. Thou Shalt Upload Photos (lots of them)
Upload photographs. You’ve got them. Don’t upload the one with you with a lampshade on your head…counterproductive; but other photographs? Absolutely. Customers want to see and participate. You want to give people a face to go with your company.
Commandment 4. Thou Shalt Upload Videos (all you can find)
Videos. You all have got videos. I don’t care whether it’s training videos or customer videos, grab your video camera and go interview some of your customers. What’s better than seeing your customer’s smiley face on your Web site? And it doesn’t cost anything.
Commandment 5. Thou Shalt Podcast (often)
Podcast. If you’re too cheap to get a camera, use the free audio software that’s in your computer. That’s what I did. I created 48 audio podcasts. If you take the podcasts I did for my book and played them back-to-back, they run 24 continuous hours of interviews. You can do that. It’s free. It just takes time.
Commandment 6. Thou Shalt Set Alerts (immediately)
Set alerts. People are talking about you. You probably need to know what they are saying and you want to participate.
Commandment 7. Thou Shalt Comment (on a multitude of blogs)
Comment. Commenting is like going to a cocktail party. You wouldn’t walk into a networking event, walk up to a group of people talking, and tell them your name and what you do in your business. That would be rude and unacceptable. Listen first. Read the blogs and add comments. You can be controversial, that’s okay. But participate. Get involved.
Commandment 8. Thou Shalt Get Connected (with everyone)
Get LinkedIn. Put it in your email that you have a LinkedIn account, you have a FaceBook account, and that you have a Twitter account. Make it a part of your heading on your letterhead, because that’s how you propagate. That’s how you sell it.
Commandment 9. Thou Shalt Explore Social Media (30 minutes per week)
Explore social media. Give me thirty minutes a week, that’s all I’m asking. Friday morning grab your coffee, lock yourself in your office, and give me thirty minutes. Just Google something. I promise you within the first 30 days you will be excited. You’ll be as excited as I am. You will get excited because of the ROI.
Commandment 10. Thou Shalt Be Creative (go forth and create creatively)
And the most important commandment is creativity. That’s all. It’s just creativity and having fun. But you know what, that’s what your customers want. They want to see transparency. They want to see authenticity. They want to see you having fun. They want to be able to relate and communicate.
